Why "Run the Ruff Way?"

At The Running Lab, we understand dogs and their common lack of exercise. With a lack of exercise, our furry friends can start to display less than ideal behaviors. If they aren't provided with proper outlets for their energy, they may start to engage in activities of their own choosing! Activities that you may not be happy with! We're here to help!

Lazy Brown Dog

Challenges Associated with Lack of Exercise:

  • Damaging chewing, digging or scratching

  • Excessive play biting and rough playtime

  • Seeking attention through barking and whining

  • Exploratory behaviors, similar to garbage rummaging

  • Excessive predatory and social play

  • Toppling furniture and jumping on people

  • Hyperactivity, heightened excitability and increased night-time activity

Dog Running

Benefits of a Well Exercised Dog:

  • Reduce or eliminate common behavior problems such as digging, excessive barking, chewing and hyperactivity

  • Keeps dogs healthy, agile and limber

  • Reduces digestive problems and constipation

  • Helps dogs build confidence and trust

  • Dogs feel sleepy, rather than restless!

  • Weight control

*Before involving your dog in physical activities, it's essential to consult with your veterinarian, especially if there's a risk of illness or injury. Additionally, ensure that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations.*

Slat Mill 101...

What is a Slat Mill?:

A dog running treadmill, also known as a "slatmill," operates WITHOUT A MOTOR. Strictly powered and controlled by your energetic and excited pup! This means that your pup can stand, walk, jog, and run! We as trainers can challenge your pup by increasing resistance and elevation!

Slat Mill Safety:

With a cushioned rubberized running surface your pup's paws will always be well protected! Wearing a well fitted harness and connected to the slat mill they cannot fall off. By using treats, toys, and energetic enthusiasm we will train your pup to love the mill!

Benefits and Frequency of Slat Mill Use:

A slat mill will allow your pup to walk, jog, or run at any speed and for any duration of time they choose! The Running Lab recommends the use of our services once a week for a dog that loves to run on the mill while no more than twice a week for a dog that likes to walk on the mill! In some high drive dog breeds such as Belgian Malinois we recommend two runs per week on the mill.
